We will talk about the foundation of the city by the Romans. The medieval city, the fights between the nobility and the battles between Arabs and Christians will take us back through time.
Plaza De San Jorge, Cáceres
The tour begins on the steps of the City Hall, where your guide will be waiting for you. Here you will discover the history of the wall and the watchtowers, as well as the different uses of the Plaza Mayor throughout the ages.
Later we will enter the old town through the Arco de la Estrella or Puerta Nueva, to witness the evil fumes of a bishop and his desire to excommunicate almost the entire population. Let's continue to the Palacio de Toledo-Moctezuma, where we will learn about the relationship between Extremadura and the New World.
Through the Puerta de Coria we will talk about the 'alquerques' and arrive at the Plaza de Santa María, with its majestic Co-Cathedral, a witness to the bombardments that devastated the city during the Civil War. Not forgetting Palacio Carvajal, or 'Casa Quemada', with its impressive garden and the Torre Redonda. Here you will understand what it was like to live in a medieval palace-fortress.
You will discover San Pedro de Alcántara and fall in love with the history hidden in the Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo. In the Plaza de San Jorge, we will pay tribute to the patron saint of the city and we will contemplate the church of La Preciosa Sangre, from which one of the hidden passages of Cáceres used to emerge.
Climbing up the slope of La Compañía, we reach the highest point of the city, where the Muslim fortress once stood, now replaced by the Palacio de las Veletas and the beautiful Aljibe (water cistern) that it houses. We will talk about gastronomy in the Plaza de San Mateo and the towers that have been demolished, before continuing to the Palacio de los Golfines de Arriba and the Adarve de Santa Ana, one of the most photographed spots.
After visiting the Palacio de la Generala, we'll end our visit at the Foro de los Balbos, where we'll get to know the ornithological side of Cáceres.
