Location Maras Salt Mines, Cusco, Peru

Inka Altitude

Venture into the northern region of Cusco, adjacent to the Sacred Valley. Commence by visiting Chinchero, a significant Inca settlement renowned for its traditional handcrafted textiles. Subsequently, traverse through the ancient agricultural terraces found at Moray and delve into the historical significance of the pre-Inca salt mines.

Upon commencement of your tour, your group will be picked up and transported for approximately one hour to the charming town of Chinchero. During this journey, you will make a brief detour to explore one of the region's remaining traditional households, offering insight into the ancient textile arts and the intricate weaving processes employed throughout history.

Following the initial drive, your vehicle will proceed for an additional thirty minutes to reach the historic site of Moray. This remarkable location, situated within a natural depression, serves as an archaeological testament to the sophisticated agricultural practices utilized by the Incas, particularly their innovative method of cultivating crops through circular terracing systems. These terraces were meticulously designed to optimize water distribution, ensuring consistent crop yields across various altitudes.

Post-Moray, you will embark upon a journey lasting approximately one hour to the renowned Salineras Salt Mines of Maray. These mines are not merely mineral deposits but rather a series of terraced structures carved out of the mountainside, formed over millennia by the natural flow of a nearby watercourse. The evaporation ponds at these sites have been a source of sodium chloride (table salt) extraction since pre-Inca times. Visitors can witness this age-old practice firsthand during their exploration of the area.

As your tour concludes, your vehicle will take approximately one and a half hours to return to Cusco, dropping you off near the bustling Main Plaza de Armas, ready to commence your next adventure or rest after a day of exploration.
