In the 13th century, the Bohemian king Wenceslas the Second issued the mining act specifying terms and conditions of silver mines functioning. 17 mints all through the Kingdom of Bohemia were gathered together in Kuttenberg in the so-called Italian court for minting a unique silver coin, the Prague Grossen.
From the 13th to the 16th century, Kuttenberg competed with Prague financially, economically, and politically. The town had a very important political and historical significance for the country with many events taking place there, such as the election of Bohemian kings, the proclaiming of the University act by Wenceslas the IV, and many others.
During the Hussite wars of the 15th century, the town served as the bulwark of the imperial forces against the followers of the priest John Hus.
