Following these initial preparations, you will embark upon the Lake Dunstan Trail, a 42-kilometer journey from Cromwell to Clyde, featuring a blend of compact gravel trails and elevated segments accessible via the e-bike's power assistance feature.
This enchanting trail boasts a remarkable Grade 1-3 classification, characterized by excellent overall conditions (consisting primarily of compact gravel surfaces). Two moderate climbs challenge hikers, but equipped with the electric bike’s advanced technology, these ascents become manageable with minimal exertion, especially when utilizing the highest "power assist" settings.
The Dunstan Trail offers an unforgettable experience, having been inaugurated in May 2021—a testament to extensive planning and engineering efforts. Along the route, you'll traverse approximately 450 meters of paved clip-on paths leading towards the mountainous terrain and a spectacular 85-meter-long Hugo suspension bridge. Totaling around two and a half hours of active cycling, this trail provides ample opportunity to sample local delights such as the Carrick Winery and the unique Burger Afloat restaurant en route.
Upon reaching Clyde, you may indulge in a brief celebration or perhaps a leisurely visit to the nearby Carrick Winery for a taste of local produce. Alternatively, you might opt for a relaxing cruise aboard the Burger Afloat, enjoying serene waterside views while savoring a refreshing beverage.
Nzbiketrails highly recommends electric bikes for this trail due to the lack of road accessibility over a significant portion of the route, extending to elevations. Experienced cyclists tend to utilize the assist levels less frequently compared to novice riders. Our bicycles accommodate both off-mode operation for family-friendly rides and group cohesion, making them ideal for outings with children and larger parties alike.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey, all participants must possess confidence on their bicycles, standing taller than 145 centimeters and being at least twelve years old. For younger individuals, an appropriately weighted e-bike suitable for their size and skill level should be chosen to facilitate safe and comfortable travel.
