Zermatt, Switzerland
TMR (Touring & Mountain Rower) plans to embark on an expedition from July 27th to August 5th, 2024, traversing through the majestic Alps region of Switzerland and Italy. This journey promises an immersive experience into the rich Walser culture, alongside strenuous ascents and daring crossings of Alpine passes.
Day 1
In Macugnaga, situated near Monte Moro, we encountered typical Walser houses constructed of larch wood upon stone foundations. The ascent to Monte Moro, reaching its peak elevation of 2,985 meters, commenced in front of the imposing eastern face of Monte Rosa. This dramatic mountain range, with its prominence exceeding 2,600 meters, served as our starting point for this challenging expedition.
Day 2
Crossing into Switzerland via the Saastal valley, we were greeted by an extraordinarily rugged landscape. Descending amidst debris, we arrived at the artificial lake of Mattmark, which offered us the breathtaking sight of cascading waterfalls originating from the surrounding glacier. Following the completion of the dam, we continued our journey towards the village of Saas Fee.
Day 3
Traveling from the Saas valley to the Mattertal valley, we traversed aerial trails, partially equipped, offering panoramic views of the stunning peaks of Weissmies, Lagginhorn, and Fletschhorn. As we ventured deeper into these high-altitude terrains, we encountered lush forests of larch and Swiss stone pine, adorned with verdant undergrowth comprising rhododendrons, blueberries, and junipers. The air was filled with fresh scents as we breathed deeply.
Day 4
Continuing northward, we ascended the slopes of Grachen, experiencing an elevated altitude above the Mattertal Valley. Towering mountains such as the Weisshorn (4,506 meters) and the Bishorn (4,153 meters) dominated the horizon on the other side. Along the way, we encountered rocky terrain and equipped staircases, leading us to the refuge where curious ibexes awaited us.
Day 5
Embarking on our adventure further, we began with one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe—spanning 490 meters. Subsequently, the path wound through alpine pastures, opening up vistas onto the majestic peaks of Monte Rosa and the awe-inspiring Matterhorn.
Day 6
Ascending through meadows en route to the Teodulo Hut, we followed the Swiss normal route, arriving at the scenic location after passing through numerous peaks. Upon reaching the hut, we found ourselves on the glacier, where we embarked on a marked route along the lifts to reach the Teodulo Hut (3,317 meters).
Day 7
Descending to the Teodulo Refuge, we retraced our steps across ancient paths that had once been used by the Walser people. We climbed to the Cime Bianche station to reach Val d'Ayas, enjoying a magnificent view of Gran Lago and the surrounding glaciers.
Day 8
Continuing southwards, we crossed pastures, eventually arriving at Lake Ciarcierio at Passo del Rothorn (2,687 meters). Proceeding through rocky terrain, we descended to the Salero Lakes. From here, we enjoyed a sweeping panorama of the main peaks of Monte Rosa: Breithorn, Castore, Polluce, and Lyskamm.
Day 9
Ascending to Col d'Olen (2,881 meters) and subsequently descending to Alagna via the Otro valley, we encountered Walser houses and hamlets. Our destination, the Pastore Refuge, offered a vantage point to observe all the peaks of Monte Rosa.
Day 10
Our last leg of the journey took us from the Pastore Refuge to Macugnaga. The final stretch involved a long mule track, meticulously reconstructed by the Alpini in 1930, leading to Passo del Turlo (2,738 meters). As we prepared to say goodbye to Monte Rosa, we embarked on the final prolonged descent toward Macugnaga.
