Transylvania
Transfăgărășan was built between 1970-1974, for a duration of 4 years, during the time of Ceaușescu and, according to official data, approximately 40 people lost their lives in the construction of the route. The inauguration of the route took place on September 20, 1974. The route on which the Transfăgărășan road runs starts from the commune of Bascov in Argeş County and passes in front of the Vidraru hydropower plant, then goes up to the Poenari Fortress. It reaches the Vidraru Dam, passes through three short tunnels, passes the dam and leaves the Vidraru Lake on the left, reaching the Capra Waterfall. The passage from Capra to Bâlea Lac is made through a tunnel of approximately 887 meters, the Bâlea Tunnel, the longest tunnel in Romania. It is an electrically lit and naturally ventilated tunnel and is approximately 4.4m high, 6m wide and has a one meter pavement.
