An Overview of Trekking Ano Verga
Ano Verga, situated on the eastern slope of Mount Kalathi at an elevation of 860 meters above sea level, lies approximately 16 kilometers north of the city of Kalamata. This charming traditional settlement retains the essence of the Greek countryside, featuring characteristic stone buildings, numerous abandoned churches, narrow cobblestone streets, and bubbling fountains adorned with lush vegetation including walnuts, mulberries, figs, cherries, and others. Its serene beauty makes it a unique destination, particularly noteworthy during periods of Turkish occupation when it was protected.
From Ano Verga, a scenic route unfolds, offering breathtaking views of the Messinian Gulf. As we proceed along this trail, the landscape transitions gradually into fertile fields. Upon reaching the Kato Verga settlement, our journey takes another turn as we ascend towards the first dwellings. Here, we encounter the iconic "Petralono" tavern, providing panoramic vistas of the surrounding area. We then enter the heart of the settlement, visiting the Evangelistria Church, renowned for its significant historical value and ample space for visitors' comfort. After traversing the well-maintained paths, we come across one of the oldest olive mills in the region.
Our final destination awaits us: the grand fountain of Ano Verga, historically important during times of Turkish rule, and ending our exploration with a pleasant stop at Selitsa Tavern. From here, the paved road seamlessly connects to the asphalt highway, concluding our journey back to Kalamata.
