Danakil depression, Ethiopia
The Danakil Depression was created through the continental drift of the African and Asian tectonic plates.
The Danakil Depression, situated at the triple junction where the African and Asian tectonic plates diverge, has been shaped over millions of years through the relentless movement of these massive continental masses. This continuous drift results in a geological depression known as the Danakil Depression or Afar Depression, characterized by its rapid erosion and formation due to the separation of the two plates at a pace of approximately 1-2 centimeters per year.
Spanning across Djibouti, Eritrea, and the Afar region of Ethiopia, the Afar Depression encompasses both the northern and southern portions of the Danakil Depression. The northern section, also referred to as the Danakil Depression, reaches depths exceeding 100 meters below sea level, presenting unique and otherworldly landscapes that challenge our perceptions of what constitutes "normal" geography.
Intriguingly, the Danakil Depression serves as a pivotal location for numerous scientific inquiries into the origins of life and human evolution. In 1974, groundbreaking research led to the discovery of "Lucy," an ancient hominid fossil discovered within the confines of the Danakil Depression. This remarkable find, now housed at the National Museum in Addis Ababa, offers invaluable insights into the evolutionary history of humanity, shedding light on the lineage leading up to modern-day Homo sapiens.
