This four-day expedition encompasses the exploration of chimpanzees and gorillas in their natural habitats within the Republic of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Participants will have the opportunity to engage in eastern lowland gorilla tracking at Kibale National Park and chimpanzee observation at Nyungwe Forest National Park. Additionally, visitors can experience the thrill of canopy walking through lush rainforests during this comprehensive safari.
Day 1
Upon departure from Kigali, guests will commence their journey towards Nyungwe National Park. Following an initial gathering at their accommodation or hotel, a comprehensive briefing regarding chimpanzee and lowland gorilla trekking will be conducted. Subsequently, participants will visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum to honor those affected by the 1994 Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsi ethnic group.
The day concludes with a transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park, where overnight accommodations may be made at Chimpanzee Lodge or similar facilities.
Day 2
On the second day, guests will embark on a dawn safari to observe chimpanzees and engage in a canopy walk through Nyungwe National Park. A hearty breakfast will precede the excursion, which includes a meet-and-greet session with the park’s rangers at Gisakura Visitor Center before heading to Cyamudongo or Uwinka Visitors’ Center. From here, participants will undertake a guided tour focusing on chimpanzee tracking, followed by a canopy walk starting at Uwinka Visitors' Center.
The itinerary concludes with a drive to Lake Kivu, Cyangungu, where they will spend the night at Emeraude Kivu Resort or equivalent lodging options.
Day 3
Starting the fourth day, guests will depart from Rusizi, Rwanda, across the border to Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Here, they will join a ranger-guided expedition to explore lowland gorillas, accompanied by a team of trackers. Participants will venture into the dense forest to seek out these majestic creatures, spending approximately one hour observing them under permitted conditions. Afterward, the group will return to the starting point and travel back to Bukavu or continue onward to Kigali depending on availability. Accommodation for the evening will be arranged at Nediva Bed & Breakfast or a comparable establishment.
Day 4
As the final day unfolds, guests will board a vehicle bound for Kigali, concluding their four-day adventure involving chimpanzee and gorilla treks within Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Upon arrival, they will be dropped off at their designated hotel or the nearest airport for their departing flight. The journey ends here.
