The Marangu Route, also referred to as the Coca-Cola route, is favored for its shorter duration and availability of permanent sleeping accommodations at campgrounds.



Day 1: Departing from Marangu Gate, travelers embark on a journey of approximately 8.3 kilometers (5 miles) over a duration of 4 to 5 hours. The ascent begins at an elevation of 1,905 meters (6,250 feet), culminating at 2,723 meters (8,934 feet). The total altitude gain for this leg of the trek stands at 818 meters.

Day 2: Continuing our expedition, we proceed from Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts via a distance of 12.5 kilometers (7.8 miles), taking around 6 to 8 hours. The route ascends from 2,723 meters (8,934 feet) to 3,721 meters (12,208 feet), resulting in an additional altitude gain of 998 meters.

Day 3: For those seeking more than one overnight stay, Horombo Huts offer ample opportunities for relaxation or exploration. One can choose to remain at the huts or opt for a leisurely walk to Mawenzi Base Camp before returning back to Horombo Huts. This extended stay aids in better acclimatization during the challenging ascent.

Day 4: Moving forward, travelers commence their descent starting from Horombo Huts towards Kibo Huts with a distance of 10.5 kilometers (6 miles) and a travel time of 6 to 8 hours. The hike progresses from 3,721 meters (12,208 feet) to 4,714 meters (15,466 feet), marking an altitude gain of 993 meters.

Day 5: Upon reaching Kibo Huts, the final stretch awaits—ascending 6.25 kilometers (3.9 miles) to reach the summit. This journey takes approximately 5 to 7 hours. From the summit, descend to 3,721 meters (12,208 feet), losing altitude by 2,174 meters.

Day 6: Completing our adventure, we conclude our journey by descending from Kibo Huts to Marangu Gate and finally to Moshi. This concludes the trek covering a distance of 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) over an estimated 6 to 7 hours. The entire ascent brings us down to an elevation of 1,905 meters (6,250 feet).
