Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
This tour offers visitors an opportunity to explore numerous natural and cultural marvels. Highlights include the breathtaking Jemma Gorge and the ancient Debre Libanos Monastery, which has historical significance dating back to the 13th century.
To reach Debre Libanos, approximately two hours' drive from Gojjam is required. In Ethiopian Orthodoxy, this site holds significant importance as it houses the renowned Saint Teclehaimanot Monastery, established during the 13th century. Legend has it that Saint Teclehaimanot remained standing with one leg elevated for seven years before falling due to exhaustion.
During the course of this journey, visitors have the opportunity to explore both historical and cultural aspects while simultaneously observing various bird species. Notably, common cranes, wheat-eared birds, black-winged plovers, and blue-winged geese are just a few examples of the avian inhabitants expected along the route.
Upon arrival at Debre Libanos, travelers shall commence their journey down the Sululta Plain. At this point, stopping at an Oromo roundhouse offers a glimpse into traditional Oromo lifestyle.
As they proceed towards the Jemma gorge, which flows into the Nile, they'll find themselves in a breathtaking setting. Here, the Black-headed Forest Oriole, White-billed Starling, Red-billed Starling, White-winged Cliff Chat, White-cheeked Turaco, and Hemprich's Hornbill are just a few of the species that could be encountered. Additionally, the Gelada, also known as the bleeding-heart baboon, is unique to Ethiopia.
The path then leads them to the church, followed by climbing the cave dedicated to Saint Teclehaimanot. Visitors are likely to encounter the remains of around 300 monks killed by Italian forces in 1936. This event further underscores the resistance against foreign oppression, rather than instilling fear. Afterward, the group heads back to Addis Ababa via car.
This itinerary encapsulates the rich tapestry of Debre Libanos, offering insights into its spiritual heritage, natural beauty, and the resilience of the Ethiopian people.
