Embark on a two-day, overnight hiking tour to the Acatenango Volcano, offering spectacular views of the continuously erupting Fuego Volcano, for an unforgettable natural spectacle.
Antigua Guatemala
Embark on a journey to the Acatenango Volcano, renowned for its breathtaking view of the constantly erupting Fuego Volcano. This two-day, overnight hiking tour is an encounter with one of nature's most stunning spectacles.
The hike requires a good level of fitness, agility, and intermediate hiking skills, as the path is notably steep. All operators follow the same standard route. Be aware that the only additional cost, charged on-site by most agencies, is the mandatory park entry fee 100 Q = 12 USD.
Day 1:
Our adventure begins at the center of Antigua, where we'll board shuttles to the volcano base, approximately 1 hour away. Upon arrival, you'll meet our local bilingual guide, pay the entrance fee, check your equipment, complete a quick registration, and then start the ascent. The hike to the campsite, where we'll spend the night, takes about 5-6 hours, depending on the group's pace. We'll provide lunch during the hike, and there will be three bathroom breaks (please bring your own toilet paper). At the camp, enjoy a mesmerizing view of the erupting Fuego Volcano, a bonfire, hot chocolate, whisky, and dinner—all included. Accommodations are in a shared dormitory with sleeping bags. For added comfort, we suggest bringing a pillow for use with the provided sleeping bags.
Day 2:
We'll rise at 4 AM for a 1.5 hour hike to experience a stunning sunrise against the backdrop of the erupting volcano. After taking in the view and capturing photos, we return to the camp for breakfast and then begin our descent to the base. We expect to arrive back in Antigua's center by 1 PM.
Note: Dress warmly and bring sunglasses, extra socks, suitable hiking shoes, trekking gear, sunscreen, toiletries, a flashlight, a pillow, snacks, water, a simple raincoat, and a waterproof bag is recommended. While you can rent these items before we start hiking, being prepared is more cost-effective. As this is a shared tour, the group will hike together at a consistent pace. Your cooperation is important to ensure everyone enjoys a great experience.
Disclaimer: Available separately from our tour is an optional 3-4 hour trek to the erupting Fuego Volcano, offered by locals at the camp for an extra fee. Please be aware that this activity is not included in our itinerary and is outside our scope of responsibility. Opting for it means you voluntarily leave our group and supervision, remaining independent until your return to camp.
