Two-day, overnight hiking tour to the Acatenango Volcano, featuring breathtaking vistas of the continuously active Fuego Volcano, providing an unparalleled natural experience.
Embark on a captivating two-day, overnight hiking expedition to the majestic Acatenango Volcano, renowned for its awe-inspiring spectacle of the continuously active Fuego Volcano. This guided adventure offers participants the opportunity to witness one of nature's most spectacular natural phenomena firsthand.
Day 1:
Commencing our journey from the heart of Antigua, we depart via shuttle to the volcano base, approximately one hour away. Upon arrival, upon meeting our knowledgeable and multilingual local guide, we pay the required entrance fee, register, and prepare our equipment. Following a brief orientation session, we embark on a strenuous yet rewarding ascent towards our overnight campsite. The challenging trail, marked by its steep incline, spans approximately five to six hours, contingent upon individual speed and stamina. During the course of the day, we will be served nutritious meals en route and will have scheduled rest stops every three hours. Our accommodation here includes a communal dormitory equipped with sleeping bags, which provides ample space for comfortable sleep. Additionally, guests may choose to enhance their stay with a luxurious option—bringing a personal pillow to make the experience even more inviting.
Day 2:
Dawn breaks early on Day 2 as we commence our morning climb, aiming to capture the vibrant hues of the sunrise against the ever-active Fuego Volcano. Post sunrise, we gather around the bonfire, savor hot chocolate and whisky, and feast on hearty meals prepared by our team. After enjoying our meal, we proceed down the mountain, arriving back in Antigua’s historic core by mid-afternoon.
Precautions and Recommendations:
To fully appreciate the beauty of the Acatenango Volcano, it is essential to dress appropriately, ensuring warmth and protection against the elements. Bring along a pair of sunglasses, sturdy footwear, trekking boots, sunblock, deodorant, toiletries, a headlamp or flashlight, a travel pillow, light snacks, water bottles, a lightweight raincoat, and a waterproof bag to protect your belongings. Although many travelers opt to purchase necessary items at the camp, pre-prepared essentials remain a prudent choice to save costs.
Important Note: It is possible to undertake an exclusive excursion to the erupting Fuego Volcano independently, but this activity is not included in our primary itinerary. Should you decide to explore further into the volcano’s terrain, please be advised that such activities fall beyond our control and require separate arrangements. To join this optional excursion, you must adhere to the conditions set forth by the local guides and maintain independence throughout the entire duration of your visit.
