San ignacio belize, Belize
Step through the gateway leading to the heart of the Mayan Underworld, where you encounter concealed chambers housing priceless Mayan relics, skeletal remains from an era long past, and evidence of geological forces that have sculpted this mystical realm over millennia.
Participants depart from San Ignacio after approximately a 45-minute van ride to the Park Reserve. Upon arrival, they are divided into small groups consisting of eight members each under the guidance of a qualified guide. The tour begins with an overview of the itinerary followed by assistance in fitting safety equipment. Participants then proceed towards the designated starting point where three significant river crossings await them.
The deepest crossing involves a rope bank across the river to facilitate a safe crossing. The subsequent two crossings feature shallower waters, typically ankle-deep. Following a 45-minute hike, the group reaches the entrance of the cave, where the guide demonstrates safety techniques for navigating the submerged area.
Once inside the cave, participants navigate through the main water passage, encountering various chambers along the way. Entry into the final chamber necessitates removing footwear due to the presence of archaeological artifacts scattered on the floor. Marveling at these ancient relics, participants learn about the cave’s rich history, including ritualistic practices such as bloodletting offerings, food offerings, and human sacrifices.
After exploring the final chamber, participants ascend a ladder to view the complete skeletal remains within. They exit the cave in the same manner they entered, proceeding back to the parking lot. There, participants enjoy a meal break before continuing their journey back to San Ignacio.
