Embark on an enriching journey through the heart of Basque culture, immersing oneself in its maritime heritage and savoring a memorable gastronomic experience at one of our esteemed Basque cider houses.
We shall rendezvous in San Sebastián, accompanied by our Sagardo Route van equipped with our knowledgeable driver/guide, en route to Albaola. This excursion aims to acquaint visitors with our rich cultural and culinary heritage. Historically, during the 16th century, our maritime pioneers ventured into the icy waters around Newfoundland to hunt whales and catch cod. A quintessential beverage among them was cider – each seafarer reportedly consumed three liters daily! Much of this cider originated from Basque farmhouses, where it was meticulously crafted and supplied to their expeditions.
Upon arrival at the site of the historic San Juan whaling ship, now submerged in the frigid waters near Canada, an impressive replica will be on display. These ancient vessels have sailed through the vast expanses of ocean thousands of years ago, carrying cargoes across great distances. Following our journey to rediscover the roots of Basque cider, we will visit a local ciderhouse. Here, we'll savor various types of cider alongside a traditional menu that showcases the unique flavors and traditions associated with this beloved product. Post-lunch, our expert guide will lead us back to our initial gathering place.

During the 16th century, Basque sailors engaged in extensive whale hunting and fishing expeditions. To sustain themselves and their crews, they relied heavily on fermented beverages such as cider.
Cider was predominantly sourced from the farmhouses of Basque communities. These farms played a crucial role in supplying essential resources for both domestic consumption and supporting sea voyages.
Each sailor reportedly consumed approximately three liters of cider daily.
