Kilimanjaro national park, Tanzania
The Machame Route, commonly referred to as the "Whiskey Route," offers one of the most popular ascents to Mount Kilimanjaro. Despite its popularity, it is considered one of the more challenging routes compared to the Marangu Route.
Machame Circuit Overview
Day 1: Departing from Moshi, travelers traverse through the lush rainforest surrounding Machame Gate, reaching Machame Camp after approximately 50 minutes.
Day 2: Following the ascent, visitors move onto the Shira 2 Camp site via a strenuous route up to a steep, rocky ridge.
Day 3: Progressing further, hikers venture eastward along a ridge before heading southeast toward the towering Lava Tower—reaching its height of 300 feet above sea level. Descending through the Senecio Forest, they arrive at Barranco Camp at an elevation of 13,000 feet.
Day 4: Initiating their descent, adventurers enter a ravine leading them to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Subsequently, they tackle a non-technical yet steep, nearly 900-foot vertical wall before traversing through hills and valleys, culminating in Karanga Valley.
Day 5: Leaving Karanga, hikers connect with the Mweka Trail, continuing up to Barafu Hut where the southern circuit concludes. Here, guests set up camp, take a break, and enjoy a meal prepared specifically for the summit attempt.
Day 6: On the final leg of their journey, hikers embark on a dawn-to-dusk ascent towards Uhuru Peak. Witnessing the breathtaking sunrise as seen from Stella Point (18,900 feet) provides unparalleled rewards.
Day 7: Upon arriving at Mweka Gate, climbers complete their expedition, collecting summit certifications. Returning to the gate, they proceed another hour to Mweka Village, where a vehicle awaits to transport them back to Moshi's accommodations.
