Cité De Carcassonne, Carcassonne, France
Explore the historical sites of Carcassonne by walking through the galleries, fortifications, and ramparts. Admire the archaeological museum with a self-guided ticket available for visitors.
Carcassonne, established as early as the 6th century BC and subsequently becoming an important Roman settlement, underwent fortification in the 4th century AD. This strategically significant location played a crucial role during the Middle Ages, particularly when King Louis IX decided to construct distinctive double-walled ramparts and expand the castle. The city was significantly renovated in the 19th century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who undertook extensive restoration work. Today, Carcassonne stands as a testament to over 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,500 years of historical significance.
Following the Cathar Crusade (1209-1229) and subsequent events such as the Inquisition and the trecento exodus of the Trencavel family, the region was left in ruins. However, in 1844, the French government entrusted the task of restoring the city of Cathars to Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. His efforts culminated in the completion of the project in 1911, resulting in the reclamation of the city's former glory. Subsequently, the royal city was officially recognized for its cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1997, ensuring its continued preservation for future generations.
| Highlights | The residence of one of France's most influential 12th-century noble families can now be explored through its historical significance. Ascend the Bishop's Tower, an architectural marvel located at the junction between the two fortified walls that once surrounded the medieval town. Upon reaching the tower’s summit, visitors will be greeted by panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. A notable feature within this historic site is the Salle Pierre Embry, a chamber adorned with three intricately sculpted polychrome alabaster statues dating back to the early 15th century. These stunning sculptures add to the rich tapestry of Gothic architecture found throughout the castle complex. |
