Engage in a refreshing swim within the expansive mangrove ecosystem, enjoying its tranquil waters and diverse marine life. Marvel at the historical significance of an ancient hacienda's ruins before indulging in a delightful coastal retreat, where a picturesque beach awaits for leisurely dining and relaxation.
Our journey from Mérida leads us towards the Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve, situated approximately 95 kilometers west of the state capital. This diverse ecosystem, spanning an extensive area of 60,000 hectares, offers an unparalleled opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to witness a stunning spectacle of color and life.
Upon arrival in the fishing community of Celestun, we embark on a serene boat ride through the estuary. Here, we are greeted by a vibrant array of flora and fauna, including thousands of flamingos that have chosen this picturesque location for their feeding grounds and resting places.
As we explore the mangrove forests along our voyage, we encounter a fascinating geological feature: the "petrified forest." This natural wonder showcases ancient tree trunks transformed over millennia into stone-like formations, offering a unique glimpse into prehistoric ecosystems.
Continuing our journey inland, we reach the charming town of Real de Salinas in Campeche. Here, we pay homage to the remnants of an ancient salt-producing hacienda, now preserved as a testament to the region's rich history and agricultural heritage.
