Over the past six decades, an active artistic community has flourished in the northeastern part of India, located adjacent to Shadipur railway station in western Delhi.
Over six decades, a thriving community of street artists flourished in the heart of India’s northern region, adjacent to Shadipur station in western Delhi. This culturally rich area, affectionately known as Kathputli Colony, accommodated approximately 2,800 families. Each household was characterized by its distinct set of artistic talents—magicians, snake charmers, acrobats, singers, dancers, henna artists, and jugglers. Kathputli’s diverse repertoire served as inspiration for renowned author Salman Rushdie, whose novel “Midnight’s Children” captured the essence of this vibrant community.
In early 2017, however, the residents of Kathputli were forced to confront their darkest fears when the neighborhood was slated for demolition, necessitating relocation. Many families experienced homelessness during this tumultuous period. Amidst such adversity, Street Tours stood as a beacon of hope, dedicated to preserving the legacy of Kathputli’s artists. Through their efforts, Street Tours welcomed visitors into the residential streets and humble dwellings of these skilled artisans, offering them an opportunity to share their remarkable abilities.
Join us on this memorable journey through the winding lanes and modest abodes of Kathputli’s artists, where we celebrate the enduring spirit and creative prowess of these extraordinary individuals.
