First Stop : Monolithic Church Guided Tour With Underground
Duration / Time: 1 hour
A professional guide approved by the Tourist Office will take you on a tour of 4 monuments:
– The Emilion hermitage
– The Chapel of the Trinity and its medieval paintings
– The catacombs
– The underground church.
The visit will allow you to know the secrets of the village of Saint Emilion, some small information:
Around 750, the history of the village begins with the arrival of a hermit from Brittany: Emilien (Aemilianus). He settled in this place called Ascumbas, in a cave which became his hermitage. He is soon joined by disciples and he goes to evangelize the population. The water from the nearby spring is said to be miraculous: it would have restored sight to a blind woman who had come to be baptized. A miracle bringing notoriety to the village, it prospers: a local pilgrimage is organized, which will soon merge with that of Saint Jean Jacques de Compostela. After the monk’s death, his disciples continued his work of creating a religious building out of the limestone block.
Second Stop : Wine Tasting in one castle or one cellar – 3 Wines
Duration: 20 minutes to 45 minutes
A local producer from Saint-Emilion will introduce you to his estate, his production and the winemaking process, ending with a tasting of two wines.
Some information before the visit:
The wine-growing area of the Saint-Émilion appellation covers 75 km2 and has 5,450 hectares of vines, which makes it possible to produce a volume of 229,000 hl of wine per year.
AOP vineyard sites must be located in the municipalities of Saint-Émilion, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Saint-Laurent-des Combes, Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, Saint-Pey-d ‘Armens, Vignonet or Saint-Suplice-de-Faleyrens.
The first classification of Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion dates back to 1955 and was carried out by the Institut National des Appellations d’Origine. It guarantees the excellence of the domains of the appellation which apply demanding specifications. This excellence is all the more recognized as this ranking is revised every ten years. This classification distinguishes three levels of quality: The Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Classés, the Saint-Émilion Premiers Grands Crus Classés (commonly called Saint-Émilion Premiers Grands Crus Classés B) and finally the Saint-Émilion Premiers Grands Crus Classés A.
After the guided tour or the tasting, a walking tour will be made of the Village of Saint-Emilion with the different places and tourist interests.
