Colca Canyon, Chivay, Peru
In this expedition to the Colca Valley, our itinerary includes exploring one of the most extensive canyon systems on Earth and visiting the charming Andean village of Chivay.
The itinerary commences with the pickup from the designated hotel in Arequipa at a predetermined time. Following this, a three-hour journey through the southern Peruvian landscape ensues, culminating in the arrival at the scenic Andean town of Chivay, situated over 3,000 meters above sea level. Here, guests are invited to indulge in a leisurely breakfast, featuring local delicacies representative of the region.
Upon refueling, the group proceeds towards the Mirador Cruz del Cóndor, approximately 50 minutes away from Chivay. At this elevated vantage point, visitors are afforded panoramic vistas of the Colca Canyon, recognized as one of the deepest in the world. Additionally, this location serves as an ideal spot for observing the aerial maneuvers of the magnificent condors.
Subsequently, the route takes us via road, and we pause briefly at several viewpoints within the vicinity, including Wayrapunko and Antahuilque. These stops allow for further appreciation of the breathtaking scenery, encompassing structures like hanging tombs, litomaquetas, and terraced ruins dating back to both Pre-Inca and Inca civilizations.
Following these stops, the travelers reach the Chacapi thermal baths, offering them 45 minutes to immerse themselves in the therapeutic waters. Alternatively, those who prefer not to partake in the hydrotherapy can opt for either zip-lining or kayaking activities independently.
Midday, the group returns to Chivay or nearby towns, allowing patrons ample opportunity to savor their lunch. Post-breakfast, they embark upon the continuation of the journey, visiting the Mirador de los Volcanes. From here, guests can survey the expansive Chila mountain range, coupled with the silhouette of snow-capped peaks like Ampato and Hualca Hualca, alongside the dormant Sabancaya volcano and the iconic Pichu Pichu archaeological site.
Lastly, the team crosses the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, a pristine environment characterized by towering volcanic silhouettes of Misti and Chachani dominating the horizon.
Concluding the expedition after 14 hours, this tour is exclusively available on Saturdays and Sundays.
