Bet Medhane Alem, Lalibela, Lalibela, Ethiopia
On a three-day hiking expedition through the Amhara Region, visitors will explore the Abune Yosef Conservation Area, immersing themselves in the rich cultural heritage of highland villages such as Ad Medhane Alem and Tigu Kebele.
Embark on a three-day guided trekking adventure through the Ethiopian Highlands starting from Lalibela. Upon arrival, your guide will meet you at your hotel at approximately 7:30 am. Proceeding towards the scenic Lasta Mountains, you'll cover approximately three hours until reaching the Merebarbu Plateau.
At Merebarbu Plateau, enjoy a fruit and kollo snack (typical Ethiopian roasted barley) before continuing your journey to the Ad Medhane Alem Plateau, also known as Atabkit. Marvel at the expansive views of the highlands from here. Watch birds of prey like the Lammergeier and Augur buzzards soaring overhead while enjoying lunch prepared by the eco-lodge.
Following lunch, explore the Ad Medhane Alem Village with your host family. Participate in the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and relax under the fireplace at the Abune Yosef Eco Lodge. Your next destination is Tigu Kebele, approximately three to four hours away. En route, admire highland farms where families work and children play, and cows and sheep graze freely in the fields.
Arriving in Tigu Kebele, check into the Abune Yosef Eco Lodge for the evening. After breakfast, venture to a scenic spot located 40 minutes away at an altitude of 4,000 meters, hiking to this location. Relax in the breathtaking surroundings of the Abune Yosef Conservation Area.
In the afternoon, choose between two activities. Option one involves hiking further to the other side of the mountains for stunning views. Alternatively, opt to join the local villagers' daily routine, milk a cow, learn how to bake Injera bread, harvest crops with the farmers, or visit the local mountain school to gain insight into Highlander culture.
End your stay in Tigu Kebele with breakfast. Following the descent, proceed to the working monastery of Asheten Maryam carved into the mountainside, which houses monks, nuns, and various religious artifacts, including ancient crosses and a Bible.
Lastly, return to Lalibela, concluding your tour of the Ethiopian Amhara Highlands during the mid-afternoon.
