Galatina, Italy
Explore the coastal beauty of Salento by journeying from the Adriatic to the Ionian Sea. Visit Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Gallipoli, and Galatina for an array of attractions during a day trip.
This tour offers an exclusive experience allowing visitors to explore four breathtaking towns within the Salento region. Each destination is meticulously curated to provide a comprehensive overview of the area's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
Starting our journey, we arrive at Galatina, a true gem of art, history, and traditions. Nestled among verdant landscapes, this charming town boasts the magnificent Basilica of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, renowned for its extensive collection of Giotto’s disciples’ frescoes. Noteworthy sites also include the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul and the historic “courtyard houses” and buildings nestled in the heart of the town.
Our next destination is Otranto, a captivating coastal village steeped in history. Characterized by its historical significance and architectural marvels, Otranto is a testament to various civilizations, including the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Aragoneses. Visitors are invited to explore the splendid Cathedral, the awe-inspiring Church of Saint Peter in Byzantine style, the imposing Castle, Towers, Pelasgi Bastions, and Walls that once guarded the ancient city.
Continuing our itinerary, we proceed towards Santa Maria di Leuca, known for its stunning coastline featuring cliffs overlooking the sea, caves, and bays with rocky bottoms. Enroute, we admire the charming towns of Santa Cesarea Terme, Castro Marina, and Ciolo Fiord. At the tip of Puglia, Santa Maria di Leuca serves as the perfect vantage point for admiring panoramic views of the harbor and the nearby sanctuary of Santa Maria de "Finibus Terrae."
Next, we travel inland to Gallipoli, often hailed as the pearl of the Ionian Sea. This Greek city presents a unique blend of both the new and old parts. The latter section features modern amenities and attractions, while the former retains the charm of a medieval village. Exploring the historic center, lined with narrow streets adorned with traditional shops selling local crafts, intricate Baroque churches, and majestic aristocratic palaces, is a highlight of this tour.
As our journey concludes, visitors are transported back to the bustling and vibrant atmosphere of the old town. Here, amidst the labyrinthine alleys and cobblestone pathways, one can discover the Cathedral dedicated to St. Agatha, a remarkable example of Baroque architecture in Salento. Another noteworthy site is the Angevine Castle, dating back to the 13th century, and the iconic Greek Fountain, one of the oldest fountains in Italy.
