Visiting the indigenous communities of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán provides an opportunity to experience their traditional customs and local attire, allowing visitors to gain insights into the daily lives of the inhabitants.
We depart from the front desk of your hotel at 9:30 AM and proceed to the Tzotzil community of San Juan Chamula, located approximately 10 kilometers north of San Cristóbal de las Casas. This community originated prior to the Spanish conquest and operates based on traditional practices and customs. Comprising the ceremonial centers of San Juan Bautista, San Pedro, and San Sebastián, these communities feature colossal crosses, one depicting Chul Metic (the Mother Divine) and the other representing Chul Totic (the Father Divine).
The San Juan Bautista temple, an amalgamation of Christian heritage and indigenous traditions, serves as both the locus of authority and the focal point for religious syncretism. It houses the intricate symbolism that integrates Catholic beliefs with pre-Columbian rituals.
Upon concluding our tour, we proceed to Zinacantan, often referred to as the "City of Bats." This charming Tzotzil village is characterized by its hilly terrain and the formation of the San Lorenzo church, a colonial structure that underwent renovation around the beginning of the 20th century. Additionally, notable churches such as those of Esquipulas and San Sebastián further enhance the spiritual landscape of Zinacantan.
