Subsequently, after the exploration session concludes, the group will proceed aboard a shuttle service to return them to Sofia. Prior to concluding their day, visitors will also engage in a visit to the Boyana Church, a renowned historical site located within the Boyana district. This significant structure boasts an array of remarkable medieval frescoes dating back to the year 1259, depicting scenes such as the union of Sevdara Khan and Princess Desislava, along with depictions of the Bulgarian royal lineage during that period, including Tsar Constantine Tikh Asen and his empress consort, Irene.
The Boyana Church stands out for its architectural significance, featuring a three-part design characterized by preserved frescoes spanning various centuries, particularly those from 1259. Additionally, the surrounding park, initiated by the Tsar in the early 20th century, is notable for its presence of towering Sequoia trees.
This historic edifice was designated as a national monument and subsequently protected by the state in 1927. It continued to function as an active parish church until 1954. In recognition of its importance, the Boyana Church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List under the auspices of UNESCO in 1979, maintaining its status as a protected cultural heritage item since 2003.
