Goreme National Park, Goreme, Turkey
Explore an historic transfer from the ancient Silk Road era in Goreme, where visitors can delve into the city's storied past. Experience a captivating traditional whirling dervish ceremony led by skilled performers, immersing oneself in a profound cultural experience.
The whirling dervish ceremonies, initiated as forms of meditation by Jalaluddin Rumi, an eminent Sufi Muslim mystic and poet from the 13th century, marked a significant departure from traditional practices. Born in Persia, Rumi resided in the bustling city of Konya during the reign of the Turkish Seljuk Empire. He exhorted his disciples, "Many paths converge towards God; my path is through dance and melody," emphasizing the transformative power of rhythmic movement and musical expression.
Inspired by Rumi's teachings, various religious groups adopted and adapted his concept of dance, known as the sema, across the expansive territories of the Ottoman Empire. Amongst these adaptations, the Mevlevi order emerged as the most illustrious, with its practitioners referred to as semazen. By the 15th century, this order had meticulously codified rituals to preserve the intricate nuances of the spiritual practice, ensuring the continuity of their traditions.
Following the conclusion of the ceremony, attendees will partake in a communal gathering where they will engage in a lively interlude before returning to their accommodations.
