The journey from Maputo to Santa Maria Island takes approximately one hour via a serene boat ride. It is believed that Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama encountered Inhaca Island in 1497-1498 during his maritime expeditions. Historically, the island served as a vital trading hub in the 1500s, primarily for the ivory trade. However, its most intriguing feature emerged during the period of Portuguese occupation; Inhaca Island became renowned as a sanctuary for shipwrecked sailors who had traversed the lengthy coastal route on foot. One of the earliest recorded instances of such a shipwreck occurred in 1552 when the Galleon S. João came ashore on the shores of Inhaca, encountering locals who welcomed them with open arms, offering sustenance and shelter before allowing them to continue their voyage aboard another vessel.
