A comprehensive three-day itinerary exploring the remarkable attractions of Orkney, featuring iconic sites like Skara Brae, the Standing Stones of Stenness, and the Italian Chapel, among others.
We commence our expedition northward, traversing the enchanting landscapes of the Black Isle en route to Orkney. Upon reaching Golspie, we shall engage in a brief culinary excursion, purchasing sustenance for our voyage aboard the ferry. Following this, we will pause at the Helmsdale Clearance to capture photographs of the Emigrants Statue. Proceeding onward, we reach Gills Bay, where we board the ferry bound for Orkney. Our journey concludes upon arrival at St Margaret's Hope, followed by a leisurely exploration of the surrounding area.
On our subsequent day, we embark upon an enriching itinerary centered around the archaeological sites of Orkney. Beginning our explorations with the Italian Chapel, accessible for a nominal fee, we may opt to admire its architectural splendor as a photo destination. Alternatively, we might venture forth to Inganess Beach, renowned for its association with the Juniata, a World War II blockship. Further along, we'll proceed to St Magnus Cathedral, where we can undertake a guided tour. An optional detour would allow us to visit the Scapa Distillery for an educational experience involving tours and tastings.
Upon returning to Kirkwall, we shall restock our energy with an island breakfast. This morning, we shall traverse the Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn, offering insights into early Scottish agricultural practices. Continuing eastwards, we'll make our way to Skara Brae, one of Europe's most intact Neolithic villages. For lunch, we shall sample the picturesque vistas offered by Stromness Marina. Here, we shall explore the Stones of Stenness, four ancient stone structures believed to date back to the Bronze Age. These monuments are integral components of the "Heart of Neolithic Orkney," recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Our final destination lies at the Broch of Gurness, an exceptionally well-preserved Iron Age settlement. Upon completion of our excursions, we shall retrace our steps to Kirkwall for our second night's lodging.
In the afternoon, we shall prepare to depart Kirkwall and head back to St Margaret's Hope via Gills Bay. Upon reaching John O'Groats, we shall indulge in a delightful meal amidst the maritime beauty. Throughout the course of our journey, we shall observe a diverse array of wildlife, including Atlantic puffins, seals, various bird species, and occasionally, an orca sighting.
Lastly, we shall conclude our trip with a homeward journey, stopping at Dunbeath Harbour and Golspie along the way.
