Golubac Fortress, Golubac, Serbia
This tour offers an exploration of the intriguing natural landscapes of the Iron Gate Gorge and Djerdap National Park, as well as an educational journey through the historical significance of the Golubac Fortress and the ancient site of Lepenski Vir. An optional scenic boat cruise along the gorge provides visitors with additional insights into these remarkable locations.
Golubac Fortress was a medieval fortified town situated on the southern bank of the Danube River, approximately 4 kilometers downstream from the contemporary city of Golubac, Serbia. The fortress, originally constructed around the 14th century, was divided into three distinct sections, each developed incrementally over time. Featuring ten defensive towers, many of these structures were designed with both military and strategic purposes in mind. Additionally, various layers of defense were added through the incorporation of firearms technology, enhancing their overall security capabilities.
One of the most notable features of Golubac Fortress is its architectural design, featuring square-shaped towers alongside reinforced designs. These advancements in fortification techniques further ensured the fortress's resilience against potential invaders throughout history.
In contrast, the Djerdap Gorge offers visitors an enchanting experience through a scenic boat cruise. Spanning over 63,000 acres, the area boasts a rich tapestry of flora and fauna, making it a treasure trove of natural beauty. Hidden along the right bank of the Danube River, from Golubac Fortress to the ancient fort of Diana, the gorge encompasses a variety of geological formations such as gorges, canyons, river valleys, and numerous caves. Among the most spectacular aspects of the gorge system lie the four most significant gorges: Golubac, Gospođina Vira, Kazan, and Sipska. However, the most intriguing and geologically unique landscapes are found in the Štrpce region, particularly within the Great and Small Kazan areas, where the Danube exhibits its narrowest point (approximately 140 meters) and deepest level (up to 90 meters).
This latter segment of the Danube, often referred to as the most picturesque stretch, provides opportunities for visitors to embark upon a thrilling boat excursion. During this journey, travelers may witness the serene beauty of the Danube River at its finest moments, including the narrowest and deepest points of the river.
Lastly, Lepenski Vir stands out as the earliest evidence of human habitation in Europe. Dating back to eight millennia ago, the village was established in Djerdap and flourished for two thousand consecutive years between the periods of 6500-4500 BC. Its significance lies in the fact that it was among the first organized settlements to appear in the open spaces of Europe. This cultural milestone was unearthed during extensive archaeological excavations conducted near Djerdap, resulting in the construction of a new visitor center in 2011, which now serves to preserve and showcase the remnants of this remarkable civilization under its protective domes.
