Central Asian City Recognized by UNESCO: A Historical Gem with Architectural Marvels
The city, which was initially selected for inclusion in the World Heritage List by UNESCO, boasts an impressive array of historical landmarks. It features two Khan's residences, eleven minarets, over twenty madrasas, five mosques, and numerous mausoleums dedicated to saints. This diverse architectural landscape underscores its significance as one of the most historically rich cities in Central Asia.
The "City of a Thousand Minarets," an Open-Air Museum, boasts the authenticity of being the sole city in Central Asia standing on its original foundation site. Originating from the Western Gate's main entrance—Ata Darvaza—the tour commences at 09:00 or 15:00, lasting approximately four to five hours.
Beginning our journey through this historical marvel, visitors will first encounter the Muhammad Aminkhan Medrese, the largest institution within this geographical area. Following this, we'll ascend to the breathtaking Kalta Minor Minaret, followed by the majestic Kunya Ark, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, alongside the coinage yard, summer and winter Khan Receptions, and a secret corridor leading to the Special Reception.
Nestled among these architectural wonders is the Djuma Mosque, renowned for its columned design and over 120 carved columns, providing a serene setting for prayer. Noteworthy next is the Tosh Hovli Palace, featuring a second Khan Palace adorned with a Harem, summer and winter receptions, and a unique Secret Reception chamber. Additionally, the palace houses a gift car presented by Tsar Alexander III, further enriching the cultural experience.
Continuing our exploration, we'll pass by the East Gates and witness the presence of the Said Niyaz Mosque and Medrese. Next up, we reach the Kutlug Murad Medrese, housing a museum dedicated to surrealistic paintings. Moving forward, the Islamic Khudjaj Complex serves as a symbol of Khiva, showcasing applied art museums and the tallest minaret in the region. This iconic structure also includes the Islamic Khudjaj School, marking the beginning of the modern era with a focus on secular education.
As we conclude our tour, we're treated to the delightful sight of traditional Central Asian cuisine being prepared in a clay oven, albeit under uncertain conditions due to external factors. This culinary adventure promises a memorable gastronomic experience, allowing guests to savor the flavors of this culturally rich city.
