Knife (khukuri) making activity with a Blacksmith

Kathmandu, Nepal

I. Experience Nepal Trek And Tour

Experience crafting your very own knife through the expertise of an esteemed blacksmith, renowned for his精湛技艺超过四十二年。通过将锈蚀金属锻造成一件精致且锋利的刀具,您将亲手掌握这一工艺精髓。

Khukuris embody the spirit of loyalty and valor, cherished traditions among the Gurkha warriors across the Himalayan region. These versatile knives find application beyond mere utility; they facilitate tasks such as shaping timber and chopping meat and vegetables. Crafted from tempered steel with a slight curve, their edges are razor-sharp. The ergonomic handles, typically made from wood or buffalo horn, further enhance grip and comfort. A distinctive feature—the presence of a minor indentation on the blade near the handle—symbolizes the divine trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. This indentation prevents blood from reaching the hand, underscoring the ancient significance of protective rituals. The blades are safeguarded within wooden scabbards adorned with leather.

This workshop offers an opportunity for participants to craft their very own small-sized Khukuri. During the process, raw iron is transformed into the desired blade shape through meticulous cutting and hammering. Subsequently, the blade undergoes intricate grinding until its keen edge is achieved. As a final touch, the handle is meticulously crafted. For safety's sake, the blade grinding operation shall exclusively take place under the supervision of the host. Guests are advised to maintain a safe distance from the potential sparks generated during this delicate procedure. Upon completion, each participant will receive a commemorative Khukuri as a memento.
