Lampa Day Trip

Discover the historical significance of the Jesuit Temple of Santiago Apostles within the Lampa area, where you can explore an extensive network of underground tunnels adorned with skeletal remains. This site showcases the architectural marvels constructed from pink ashlar stone during the colonial era.

Upon arrival at your hotel in Puno at 8 am, we will commence our journey towards Lampa, covering a distance of approximately 2 hours. Upon reaching Lampa, we shall proceed to the Jesuit Temple of Santiago Apostol, an architectural landmark that symbolizes the town. Within this site, visitors can explore various religious artifacts including a statue of the Virgin of Chiquinquira, a leather-cast crucifix, a silver representation of the Immaculate Conception, and a replica of Michelangelo's Pietà.

Next, we will navigate into the atrium of the Church, a prominent structure adorned with eight towered structures. Here, we will delve into the ancient catacombs, an awe-inspiring burial place where skeletal remains and bones are meticulously arranged to precise dimensions. This area offers a unique glimpse into the cultural heritage of Lampa, showcasing intricate details of human anatomy.

Following our exploration of the catacombs, we will continue our tour, passing through the streets of Lampa, admiring its colonial architecture. Notably, we will pay homage to the Casona Frisancho, a historic mansion that showcases the grandeur of the past. We will also traverse the Municipal Hall, a beautifully constructed building made from pink ashlar stone, which serves as a testament to the region’s historical significance.

Our route will lead us across the Cal y Canto Bridge, a notable structure known for its beauty but recently experiencing structural challenges due to environmental factors. Despite these difficulties, the bridge stands as a significant landmark in the region, offering scenic views along the way.

As we return to Puno, we will pause at a local market, allowing ample opportunity for purchasing souvenirs or gifts for friends and family. It is recommended to engage in some shopping during this period, ensuring a memorable experience while preserving funds for other aspects of your itinerary.
