The region experienced severe flooding due to its impermeable soil composition, which led to frequent overflow of latrine pits and increased instances of disease transmission among residents. Historically, this location served as the residence of several significant cultural and political leaders in Mozambique. These individuals played crucial roles in the country's struggle for independence, contributing significantly to national identity and development.

Today, Mafalala remains one of the poorest urban areas in Maputo, characterized by inadequate living conditions and limited access to basic services. Efforts to improve infrastructure and provide essential amenities have been slow, exacerbating existing socioeconomic disparities within the neighborhood.
