The magnificent crown of the Cottian Alps, framed by the majestic silhouette of the Monviso massif, stands prominently against the backdrop of this imposing fortress. Constructed during the 13th century as a strategic military stronghold, the structure underwent extensive renovations in the 15th century under the visionary leadership of Valerano, the enlightened ruler of the Marquisate of Saluzzo. His masterful transformation elevated the fortress into a luxurious residence for the establishment of the fiefdom of La Manta.

Valerano's dedication extended beyond mere architectural enhancement; he also enriched the Barony Hall with exquisite frescoes that serve as timeless testimonies to the knightly traditions of his era. The southern wall boasts the captivating image of the Fountain of Youth, inspired by the chivalric tale of "La Dame aux Camélias," while the adjacent chamber showcases nine noble heroes and their virtuous counterparts from classical antiquity, embodying the chivalric ideals of military prowess and moral virtue.

In the late 15th century, the complex was further revitalized, and the Hall of Grotesques dates back to this period. Its intricate ceiling, adorned with paintings and stuccos, exhibits a distinctly Mannerist aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the works of Raphael within the Vatican's Loggias.

Visitors will find these spaces particularly noteworthy: the service areas, such as the cellar rooms and the expansive kitchen with its vaulted ceiling and monumental fireplace; the castle church, featuring lavishly embellished frescoes depicting the Passion of Christ; and the vast, verdant gardens, offering breathtaking views of the picturesque slopes of the Varaita Valley.
