Mustang Tiji Festival 2024

The distinctive Buddhist festival held exclusively within the walls of Upper Mustang's Lo Manthang city.

The Upper Mustang region, nestled amidst the majestic Himalayan mountains, boasts unparalleled natural beauty and abundant natural resources. This pristine wilderness is also revered for its spiritual significance, as evidenced by the presence of the Himalayas, specifically the Kaligandaki River, which flows through the region. Known as the cradle of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths, the valley is home to numerous monasteries and ancient caves, making it a sacred pilgrimage site for devotees.

Upper Mustang, often referred to as the "last forbidden kingdom" of Nepal, serves as an ancient trade route connecting the country's eastern and western regions. Its breathtaking views of towering peaks such as Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri make it an ideal destination for trekkers seeking adventure and awe-inspiring landscapes. The Tiji Festival Trek, initiated by Samdup Rabten in the 17th century, offers participants an opportunity to immerse themselves in Tibetan traditions, commemorating the legendary tale of a son rescuing the Mustang kingdom from impending doom.

The itinerary begins with an arrival in Kathmandu on Day 1, followed by permit processing and a flight to Pokhara on Day 2. From there, travelers embark on a challenging journey to Lubra/Lupra village on Day 3, where they can enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. On subsequent days, trekkers traverse through stunning landscapes, visiting Chungshi Cave Monastery on Day 4, and exploring the ancient Chosar Caves and Monasteries on Days 5 and 6. A highlight of the trip includes observing the Tiji Festival on Day 6, when visitors witness unique rituals held at the Chhode Monastery. The final leg of the journey takes trekkers from Lo Manthang to Yara, followed by a brief rest period at Yara before continuing their descent to Kagbeni. The journey concludes with a visit to Muktinath and a return flight to Jomsom, then a drive back to Pokhara, and finally, a departure back to Kathmandu.
