Maison De Queen'S Own Rifles Of Canada, Bernieres-Sur-Mer, Bayeux, France
Embark on a guided day trip from Bayeux to explore the historic D-Day beaches of Juno, where poignant headstones and enduring battle-torn landscapes serve as eternal memorials to the Canadian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. This unforgettable journey offers visitors the opportunity to pay respects at these sacred sites, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who fought bravely against tyranny.
During our tour, we aim to pass down the legacy of World War II through storytelling, covering various aspects such as D-Day operations, including ground, naval, and airborne forces, as well as the strategic use of fortifications like Fortitude and the Atlantic Wall. We will also delve into the experiences of the French resistance and German occupation during this period.
Our journey begins at the Ardenne Abbey, an ancient structure dating back to the 12th century, now used as a museum. It served as a training camp for the French resistance during the German occupation, later becoming a site of tragedy when 27 Canadian soldiers were executed. Alongside this, we will visit two memorials honoring the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and the Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment. At Hell's Corner, we commemorate the Canadian soldiers' bravery against repeated German attacks and bombardments lasting three weeks prior to the liberation of Carpiquet Airfield on July 4th.
The next leg of our journey takes us to Juno Beach, where the Canadian troops made history with the landings and parachute drops on D-Day. Here, we'll explore the remains of the Atlantic Wall, featuring strongpoints, Tobrouk, and command posts. A Cosy's Pillbox, known for its distinctive tilt, witnessed intense fighting on June 6th, 1944. Following this, we'll proceed to the Juno Beach Centre, highlighting the landing of the Regina and Canadian Scottish regiments and the pivotal role played by the Queen's Own Rifles and Fort Garry Horse Armoured Division in the assault.
For lunch, we'll pause at the Juno Beach Centre to reflect on the events that shaped a new nation and the contributions of the entire population to support the Allied cause. Afterward, we'll continue our exploration at the nearby Hotel Graves, where key figures of the war correspondence met. Finally, we end our tour with a visit to the Canada House, home to a memorial dedicated to the Queen's Own Rifles Regiment and Fort Garry Horse Armoured Division, paying homage to those who fought valiantly in the assault.
