Pointe noire, Republic Of The Congo
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Conkouati Douli National Park, renowned for its unparalleled biodiversity, including an extraordinary array of flora and fauna.
The Conkouati-Douli National Park (CNPD) is situated approximately 130 kilometers east of Pointe-Noire, spanning the districts of Nzambi and Madingo-Kayes. Established in 1999, CNPD stands out as the most biodiverse region within the country. It borders Gabon to the north and west, with the Atlantic Ocean to the south and southwest. Currently covering an expansive area of 795,500 hectares, including substantial maritime territories, CNPD represents the sole marine protected area in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The CNPD encompasses diverse ecosystems such as the coastline, savannas, mangroves, interlaced lagoons and lakes, and the rich sub-littoral forest. This natural mosaic includes remote areas inhabited by indigenous communities who have remained largely untouched since the cessation of logging over two decades ago. Additionally, the park's savanna landscape on the Niari Plains provides habitat for various species, including endangered animals like gorillas, chimpanzees, hippos, elephants, and buffaloes; Nile crocodiles; sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, and whales; and numerous migratory bird species.
Inhabitants of the surrounding villages, numbering around 7,800 individuals, predominantly engage in fishing, primarily among the Vili community, dating back to the 13th century. However, contemporary issues related to wildlife management and sustainable resource use persist, highlighting ongoing challenges in maintaining harmonious relations between local populations and park conservation efforts.
