Patan Durbar Square, situated at the center of Patan city, is an esteemed cultural landmark that exemplifies Newari architectural prowess and historical significance. This site comprises a grand palace ensemble encompassing three courtyards and venerable temples.

Exploring the rich heritage of Patan Durbar Square reveals its historical significance and cultural richness. Nestled within the heart of Patan City, this square is home to numerous attractions that showcase Newari architecture and traditional crafts.

The Palatial Complex, featuring three major courtyards including Mul Chowk, hosts a blend of architectural wonders such as the Krishna Temple, Bhimsen Temple, and the Golden Temple of Hiranya Varna Mahavira. Additionally, the Sundari Chowk, known for its exquisite sunken bath, offers exceptional sculptures crafted in wood, stone, and metal.

Patan Durbar Square boasts several temples and religious sites. The Taleju Bhawani Temple, located at the northeast corner of Mul Chowk, is a notable example of an octagonal, three-story marvel. Situated at the center of Sundari Chowk, the Royal Bath is another significant attraction, renowned for its magnificent stone carvings.

The Degu Taleju temple, situated between Mul Chowk and Mani Keshab Narayan Chowk, adds to the square’s spiritual appeal. This site serves as both a royal palace and a sacred space, reflecting the importance of Buddhism in Patan’s history.

In addition to these attractions, Patan Durbar Square includes the Rudra Varna Mahavihar Buddhist Monastery Complex, which houses an extensive collection of sculptures and statues dating back centuries. This complex has played a crucial role in the coronations of several ancient kings.

The Red Machhendranath Temple, established in 1408 AD in Tabahal, is a prime example of early Nepalese architecture. Dedicated to Red Machhendra, this temple is open during half of each year when he resides there. Another noteworthy temple, the Min Nath temple in Tangal, dates back further than the Red Machhendranath temple.

Lastly, the Hiranya Varna Mahavihar (Golden Temple), built by King Bhaskar Verma in the 21st century, stands out for its stunning golden facade and intricate carvings. Inside, the upper tiers feature the white image of Amoshpash Lokeshwor and a large prayer wheel, while the lower tiers house depictions of Lord Buddha’s life stories.

Finally, visitors can explore the MahaBouddha temple, situated nearby, which showcases high-quality brick construction and thousands of engravings depicting Lord Buddha. This terracotta structure exemplifies the pinnacle of 14th-century Nepalese architecture.
