Port of Spain, Matura Beach Turtle Migration Observation

Port of spain, Trinidad And Tobago

Island Experiences

Giant leatherback sea turtles undertake an extensive migration spanning several months before returning to lay their eggs on secluded beaches at nightfall. This captivating spectacle offers insights into these magnificent creatures' remarkable reproductive cycle and migratory patterns.

Departing Port of Spain in the late afternoon, guests will be picked up from their accommodation. Proceeding eastward, travelers will traverse several rural communities en route to Matura Beach, located on Trinidad’s eastern coastline. Upon arrival, an expert-led group will lead visitors towards the beach for an observation of the turtles’ annual nesting period under the glow of the lunar sky.

These majestic leatherback sea turtles can attain weights exceeding 1,500 pounds (approximately 680 kg) and span lengths reaching nearly 10 feet (about 3 meters). Their migration across the Atlantic Ocean culminates in the females returning to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs, a process that occurs for approximately two hours each night. Scientists assert that such migrations and nesting behaviors have remained largely unchanged since roughly 150 million years ago.

Observations during this event might offer the opportunity to witness a hatchling emerging from its eggshell and making its way into the ocean. Additionally, numerous nests containing upwards of 80 eggs are commonly found; however, only 2-3 turtles successfully emerge from each site. As darkness falls, guests will be guided back to Port of Spain, with a scheduled drop-off by midnight.
