Castel Sant'Angelo is a fortress-castellum located on the Palatine Hill in Rome. It was originally built as an imperial mausoleum during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD) and later converted into a military fortification.
Visitors can enter the castle through the main gate on the Palatine Hill. A guided tour is recommended to navigate through the different levels and discover the complex history of the site.
Lower levels of the castle house several important historical chambers including the Chapel of Saint Lawrence, which contains works from early Christian art.
