Wellington Rings Tours

Explore private farmlands boasting breathtaking vistas overlooking the Cook Strait, South Island, and Kaikoura Ranges. Ascend to sea level for an opportunity to encounter beloved New Zealand fur seals.

Starting from the heart of Wellington, we will pick you up in our state-of-the-art 4WD Mercedes van, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey. Our exploration begins at Otari-Wilton's Bush, a 100-hectare ancient forest and botanic garden renowned globally for its dedication to native plant species. Recognized as a 6-star Garden of International Significance by the NZ Gardens Trust, this site offers insights into the landscape of New Zealand during pre-European times, featuring unique flora and fauna adapted to local environments.

From Otari-Wilton's Bush, we proceed to the scenic southern coastline via private access routes, including Terawhiti Station, an historic and extensive station in New Zealand. Here, we might encounter grazing animals such as sheep, cattle, and goats along the ascent. As we crest the hill, we enjoy breathtaking vistas across the Cook Strait, Kaikoura Ranges, and the South Island. This area is currently part of the Capital Kiwi Project, where wild kiwis have been reintroduced after being absent for nearly a century due to habitat loss.

Continuing our journey, we ascend the ridge line to Project West Wind, a wind farm designed to generate sufficient energy for the entire Wellington region. This initiative highlights the importance of renewable energy sources in sustaining agricultural operations under challenging conditions. Alongside this, your guide provides detailed explanations about the historical significance of Terawhiti, including the story of the kiwi reintroduction and ongoing efforts in wildlife conservation.

As we descend towards sea level, we approach the Karori Rock Lighthouse, also known as the "leaning lighthouse," one of New Zealand's earliest automated lighthouses. This structure, with its distinctive tilt, serves both navigation and cultural purposes, attracting visitors eager to witness its unique architectural feature. On the way to Tongue Point, we visit the fur seal colony, observing these playful creatures in their natural environment. Your knowledgeable guide shares fascinating details about the colony's history, ecology, and conservation efforts, emphasizing the role played by human intervention in their resurgence.

Throughout our journey, we appreciate panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, offering a serene backdrop for reflection. Upon returning to central Wellington, we invite you to immerse yourself further in the lesser-known landscapes of the region, allowing time to fully absorb the beauty and depth of these areas.
