Day One: Puerto Maldonado to the Lodge

Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado, guests are collected either by air taxi or public transportation and taken to the port where they board a traditional wooden canoe for an approximately one-hour journey downriver to the lodge. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a refreshing glass of local fruit juice and invited to their suite. The day concludes with an afternoon exploration of Monkey Island, situated across the Madre de Dios River. Guests can learn about the diverse range of monkey species while enjoying the opportunity to interact with these fascinating creatures.

In the evening, guests venture into the surrounding forest to search for caimans with the assistance of a headlamp. These elusive creatures often reside along the banks of the Madre de Dios River, making this an exciting adventure. Additionally, guests may encounter the Capybara, the world’s largest rodent, weighing around 60 kilograms and boasting impressive adaptations like its tail-like snout. Dinner awaits at the lodge, followed by a comfortable night's rest before departing for the next destination.

Day Two: Lake Sandoval

After a hearty breakfast, guests embark on a leisurely three-kilometer hike to Lake Sandoval, a unique location within the Tambopata National Reserve known for its piranha habitat. Guided by experienced naturalists, guests use a small rowboat to explore the lake, encountering various bird and monkey species such as hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, herons, eagles, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and even sloths. There is also a chance to spot a family of giant river otters, each measuring nearly two meters in length, which faces significant threats due to environmental changes.

For those seeking sustenance, a traditional lunch is served at the lodge, providing energy for the remainder of the trip. Later, guests participate in a nighttime guided walk through the lush rainforest, revealing an array of insect, amphibian, reptile, and nocturnal animal species. This experience culminates in a delicious dinner, concluding a memorable day spent exploring the Amazon’s rich biodiversity.

Day Three: Return to Puerto Maldonado

Starting the day with a pre-dawn canopy walk offers guests a unique vantage point from which to view the rainforest at eye level. Located at approximately thirty meters above sea level, visitors can admire the vibrant avian life including toucans and macaws. Afterward, guests return upstream towards Puerto Maldonado, where they are transferred to the airport for flights heading to Lima, Cusco, or onward transportation services.

This itinerary showcases the incredible variety of wildlife and breathtaking landscapes found throughout the Tambopata National Reserve, ensuring an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Amazon.
