The Transfăgărășan route, renowned for its stunning beauty, has emerged as one of the most captivating roads in Romania, offering an unparalleled holiday experience due to its rich array of scenic landmarks and breathtaking mountain vistas.
Transfăgărășan was constructed between 1970 and 1974, spanning over four years under Ceaușescu's administration, as per official records. Approximately forty individuals tragically lost their lives during the construction process of this monumental highway. On September 20, 1974, the inaugural ceremony marked the official opening of the Transfăgărășan route.
The route traverses various geographical features, beginning at the commune of Bascov in Argeş County and progressing towards the Vidraru Hydropower Plant. Subsequently, it ascends to the imposing Poenari Fortress, where it encounters the Vidraru Dam. Following its passage through several narrow tunnels, including the Bâlea Tunnel (approximately 887 meters long), the route continues onwards.
Upon exiting the dam, the route ventures into the Vidraru Lake, after which it proceeds to the picturesque Capra Waterfall. Finally, the journey culminates in Bâlea Lac, with a notable feature being the Bâlea Tunnel, which stands out as the longest tunnel in Romania due to its length, height, width, and unique design of having an elevated pavement. This tunnel is both electrically illuminated and naturally ventilated, ensuring optimal conditions for travelers.
