We find ourselves immersed in the enchanting landscapes of the Red Wall, a biosphere reserve situated within the majestic Rhodope Mountains. Our initial destination invites awe and reverence—Visiting the revered Church "Sveta Bogoroditsa - Blagoveshtenie" (Fish Church). This magnificent structure, renowned for its miraculous powers, serves as a testament to faith and spiritual significance, enveloping visitors in a tranquil ambiance reminiscent of ages past.
Asen's Fortress, often referred to as Petrich Fortress, is a medieval stronghold located in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, close to Asenovgrad. Constructed during the Byzantine era around the 9th or 10th century, the fortress experienced substantial expansion and fortification during the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 13th century, especially under Tsar Ivan Asen II. Its strategic location atop a rocky hill offers panoramic views of the Asenitsa River Valley.
The fortress was initially built in 1083 by the Georgian military commander Gregory Pakourianos. Over the years, it transitioned from being a Georgian Orthodox monastery to a Bulgarian one, flourishing during the Second Bulgarian Empire. Today, the monastery complex comprises several buildings, including churches, monastic quarters, and administrative facilities. The highlight of the complex is the Church of the Virgin Mary, originally constructed in the 14th century and subsequently renovated in the 17th century.
