Txakoli, a traditional wine originating from the Basque Country, is crafted using indigenous white grape varieties. At its heart lies the renowned Hondarrabi Zuri, the star grape variety of the region. This wine embodies both its unique geographical heritage and the maritime, temperate Atlantic climate characteristic of the area.
Produced under the auspices of three distinct Denominations of Origin (DOs) spread across the three Basque provinces—Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, and Araba—the quality of Txakoli is deeply rooted in these regions' natural conditions. Within each DO, numerous small and medium-sized family-owned enterprises contribute to this rich tradition.
The historical development of Txakoli has been marked by significant milestones:
- Getariako Txakolina/Txakoli de Getaria (1996): This designation began with 440 hectares of vineyards and 34 bodegas, focusing on producing the freshest, most invigorating versions of Txakoli.
- Bizkaiko Txakolina/Txakoli de Bizkaia (1994): Established later, this DO encompassed 425 hectares and 38 bodegas, offering more complex flavors due to its location inland.
- Arabako Txakolina/Txakoli de Alava (2001): More recently, this limited-production designation focused solely on 100 hectares and seven wineries, emphasizing a more refined approach.
Each of these DOs contributes uniquely to the diverse landscape of Txakoli, showcasing the region's commitment to preserving and promoting this traditional beverage.
