Vlorë, Albania
We will embark on an expedition to rediscover the lesser-known pathways traversed by ancient caravan routes within the Laberia Region, nestled amidst the majestic peaks of Vlora and Himara.
Day 1: Dukat - Terbac
Starting our journey from Vlora, we transfer via car to the picturesque village of Dukat nestled in a small valley. This charming location marks the beginning of our adventure. We follow ancient trails connecting the Bay of Vlora with inland villages, ascending towards the forest of Bredhi where we get a stunning view of the Adriatic Sea, culminating in Qafa e Shen Gjergj (1145 m). Further up, we encounter towering peaks such as Cika (2044 m) and Qorre (2018 m), offering panoramic vistas. Our descent takes us through the ancient oak forest, passing through the deserted village of Pirgu before reaching Terbac. Enjoying free time to explore the remnants of communist buildings.
Accommodation is arranged in a guesthouse managed by a shepherd family originally from Pirgu, providing all meals included.
Day 2: Terbac - Kallarat
On this more leisurely day, we depart from Terbac to Kallarat. Following a path through pine forests and light woods, we approach the village of Vranisht at the base of Mount Cika. Before embarking on our hike, we pause to enjoy refreshments at the local café. A scenic trail winds its way through hills, eventually leading us to Kallarat. Alongside numerous communist memorials, we admire the beauty of the Albanian landscape. As we near the summit, the views expand to encompass Qafa e Shen Gjergjit and the slopes of Bogonica, which we plan to tackle later in the week.
In keeping with the rustic charm of Albanian villages, numerous communist relics remain intact.
Day 3: Kallarat - Mount Bogonica - Pilur
This day's challenge begins at the partisan monument, guiding us past a Greek-destroyed village and onto a series of hidden green meadows on the side of the mountain. In the summertime, two shepherds reside here, herding sheep while managing the ever-present threat of wolves. At the peak of 1400 meters, we witness a sweeping panorama stretching from Corfu and the Butrint Lagoon along the Albanian Riviera to the coastal city of Himara. Nemercka (2482 m), covered in snow from November to May, adds a touch of winter wonderland, while the upper villages of Kurvelesh become distinguishable from afar.
Continuing through majestic valleys, we arrive at the enchanting village of Pilur. Accommodation is provided in a guesthouse. Meals including breakfast and dinner are also included.
Day 4: Transfer from Pilur to the Sea
Our final leg of the journey concludes with a tranquil transfer to the seaside.
