Engaku-Ji Temple, Kanagawa, Kamakura, Japan
Discover the rich history and cultural heritage of Kamakura's first Samurai capital through an expert-led tour. Immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty and serene atmosphere of its iconic architectural landmarks.
The picturesque streets of Kamakura today bear witness to its tumultuous past, with over 170 Buddhist temples standing as silent sentinels over the graves of those who fought here long ago. Amongst them, the second-most revered Zen temple, Enkaku-ji, stands just two minutes away from Kita-Kamakura Station, its imposing Sanmon Gate serving as a gateway into its serene halls.
As we proceed deeper into the sacred precincts, our path takes us to the majestic Butsuden, where the Buddha statue commands respect. Next, we move onto the Dharma Hall, where the ceiling is adorned with a captivating dragon painting. Our journey continues upwards, reaching the iconic Bonsho Bell, a precious national treasure that adds a touch of historical significance to the ascent.
At Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, we find ourselves immersed in the rich history and symbolism of Kamakura. Dedicated to the god of war, Hachiman, this ancient shrine serves as a testament to the divine protection once bestowed upon the region. Situated atop a hill, the shrine offers panoramic views of Kamakura, while the 450-meter Dankazura walkway, extending to the Third Torii gate, provides a breathtaking vista along the coastal path.
In addition to its spiritual offerings, Kamakura is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship, particularly its lacquerware tradition. This art form, initially created by Buddhist sculptors centuries ago, evolved during Japan’s Edo period to incorporate everyday objects such as utensils and decorations. Today, visitors can explore the Kamakura Lacquerware Museum, which showcases a collection spanning the Muromachi era to modern times, offering insights into the evolution and continued relevance of this ancient skill.
