Explore the picturesque landscapes and rich historical heritage of Scotland’s northernmost regions during a 5-day scenic tour. Discover the enchanting beauty of the Orkney Archipelago, where ancient sites coexist with breathtaking natural vistas. Venture into the rugged terrain of Scotland’s northern coast, uncovering mysteries such as Loch Ness, and ascend to the awe-inspiring heights of the Cairngorm Mountains.
On Day 1, departing from Edinburgh, travelers head westward toward Stirling, passing by iconic landmarks such as Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. Proceeding further, they reach Doune Castle, known for its use in filming Monty Python's "Holy Grail." A brief stop in the charming town of Callander provides an opportunity for refreshment.
Next, the journey takes them through picturesque locations including Loch Luibnaig, Loch Earn, Glen Ogle, and Glen Dochart. Surrounded by the wild and remote Rannoch Moor, the breathtaking views offer awe-inspiring vistas of an extinct volcanic landscape. This area was also the site of the infamous Clan MacDonell massacre in 1692.
Continuing northward along the Great Glen, travelers arrive at Loch Ness, renowned for being the subject of numerous sightings purportedly identifying "Nessie," the Loch Ness Monster. The day concludes in Inverness, offering visitors ample time to explore this "Capital of the Highlands."
On Day 2, departing Inverness early, drivers traverse the Black Isle and pass Dunrobin Castle. Driving northeast, they experience spectacular coastal scenery featuring Europe’s oldest landscapes. Opportunities abound for spotting wildlife such as golden eagles and red deer.
Near Scotland's most northerly mainland village, John O’Groats, passengers board a ferry to cross the Pentland Firth. Upon reaching Orkney, they proceed to the Italian Chapel, stopping briefly before proceeding to the Viking stronghold of Kirkwall. Here, visitors can explore the magnificent Viking Cathedral and stroll through the historic town center.
Day 3 begins with exploration of Orkney's ancient islands, experiencing a blend of natural beauty characterized by fertile green pastures contrasted with golden sandy shores. Key attractions include Skara Brae, the mystical Prehistoric Stone Circle at Brodgar, the Standing Stones of Stenness, and Maeshowe, an impressive Viking-era structure containing one of the largest collections of Norse runes from the 12th century.
On Day 4, after leaving Orkney, travelers sail back to the mainland via the Viking waters. They then drive across the Scottish highlands, traversing the stunning Ben Loyal and Ben Hope mountains, followed by rugged cliff formations and golden sand beaches. The trip culminates at the far northwest, where the grand Assynt Mountains await. Notable sites include the 15th-century ruins of Ardvreck Castle. Finally, arriving at Ullapool at the mouth of Loch Broom, a picturesque white-washed fishing village, guests enjoy their final night there.
On Day 5, travelers start their journey with visits to Corrieshalloch Gorge and the ancient Clava Cairns. Later, they explore the more recent historical events of the Culloden Battlefield. The afternoon concludes with a drive through the majestic Cairngorm National Park, passing through Highland Perthshire's ancient Caledonian pine forests before dropping off in Edinburgh.
